The Prescription: Fiscal Policy for Today’s Economy with Lisa Zarlenga

The Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center is holding a series of online conversations on tax and fiscal policy in today’s economy. The discussions take place every other Thursday afternoon and feature varying perspectives on the historic economic challenges facing the United States and the world and the best ways to address them.

This week's guest is Lisa Zarlenga, who will discuss taxation of cryptocurrency. A partner at the law firm Steptoe & Johnson, Zarlenga will explain the controversial tax compliance rules for cryptocurrency investors and platforms included in the bipartisan infrastructure package recently passed by the Senate. Though gains earned from cryptocurrency trading are subject to tax, these technologies’ unique characteristics have made constructing an effective enforcement regime difficult.
