Tax Policy Center's 7th Annual Tax Day Event
Who Pays and Who Should Pay Federal Taxes?
Katharine Graham Conference Center, Urban Institute
2100 M Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.
Thursday, April 9, 2009, 12:00-1:30 p.m. ET (light lunch at 11:45 a.m.)
Is the tax code fair? By proposing to raise taxes on families making more than $250,000 and cut them for most who make less, President Obama has added new fuel to the ongoing debate over how progressive our federal tax system should be. This issue is critical as the administration confronts challenges from health reform to global warming.
Come get a head start on Tax Day as a panel of Washington’s top tax experts discusses how the rich have been taxed, how tax burdens have shifted across the income distribution, and whether we should move toward more or less progressive taxes.
Panelists:
John "Buck" Chapoton, partner, Brown Advisory; former assistant secretary for tax policy, Department of the Treasury
Robert Greenstein, founder and executive director, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (invited)
Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president, DHE Consulting; director of domestic and economic policy, 2008 John McCain presidential campaign; former director, Congressional Budget Office
Ruth Marcus, editorial writer and columnist, The Washington Post (moderator)
Roberton Williams, senior fellow, Tax Policy Center
