- The main cause of AMT liability is loss of typical reductions in taxable income, most commonly dependent exemptions and deductions for state and local taxes and for medical expenses.
Source: Suppose They Took the AM Out of the AMT?. - Senators Baucus and Grassley have proposed to repeal the AMT in 2007. Doing so would reduce revenues by $960 billion through 2018 if the Bush tax cuts are not extended and by more than $1.8 trillion if they are. More than 85 percent of tax savings would go to taxpayers in the top fifth of the income distribution.
